Eric M. Thompson is truly a versatile drum-set artist and marching percussion educator, composer, arranger and consultant. Eric graduated from The New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in Jazz Studies, studying with Fred Buda, Cecil McBee, and Danilo Perez. After graduation, Eric moved to New York City, where he continued to perform, record, and tour both nationally and internationally as a performer and clinician. He has performed with such greats as: George Garzone, Danilo Perez, John McNeil, John Abercrombie, and Rufus Reid.

Thompson’s rudimental career began in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he marched with the Emerald Knights Drum & Bugle Corps, and finished his marching years as a two-time member (1989 & 1991) of the world champion Star of Indiana Drum & Bugle Corps. Eric went on to perform in, instruct, and write for the University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band and the All-American College Band at Disneyland in 1995. As an instructor, consultant, clinician, and arranger, Thompson has served on the Colts and Blue Stars percussion teams, consulted with multiple high school lines throughout the Midwest and East Coast, and also served as assistant director for the Grant Wood All-City Flag & Drum Corps of Cedar Rapids. Additionally, he has consulted and served as a clinician with Coastal Carolina University, The University of Northern Iowa, The University of Alabama, and The University of Iowa in both marching percussion and jazz drum-set. Thompson was the Corps Director for Coastal Surge Drum & Bugle Corps in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina from 2014-2015. 

Presently, Thompson is Director for The Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success in Cedar Rapids and is an active percussion and jazz educator/adjudicator, who is a part of S.E.I.B.A. He is the founder of “Thompson's Drum Pad” which provides the opportunity to achieve distinction in the specialized areas of marching percussion and drum-set. Concurrently, he is the leader of his own group: “Eric Thompson’s Fun-Time Music Hour,” & a founding member of “Local on the 8s.” He is an artist/performer with SABIAN cymbals and endorses Vic Firth sticks as a marching percussion specialist on their education team.​
